Tijeras Bio-zone Education Center Accessible and Inclusive  Sensory Trail

One of Ciudad SWCD’s objectives is to ensure the ideal of good land stewardship on private and public lands within its boundaries. The District realizes that in order for individuals to become stewards of our land, one must first connect to nature and the environment around them. Furthermore, Ciudad SWCD believes that connecting to nature is an integral part of the dimensions of health, and when an individual gets outdoors, there are positive health outcomes that create resilience behaviors that directly correlates to resilient community outcomes. Thus, it is our hope that everyone will have access and experience the great outdoors, in order to grow to love and care for our forests, watersheds, and our lands.

With funding from the New Mexico Economic Development Department Outdoor Recreation Division 2022 Outdoors Recreation and Trails+ Grant, Ciudad Soil & Water Conservation District, in collaboration with the City of Albuquerque Open Space Division, Hero’s Path Palliative Care, Nature Matters Academy, and other partners will build an ADA accessible trail at the Tijeras Bio-zone Educational Center.  The trail  aims to go beyond typical ADA Standards and will be under construction over the next 2 year. The accessible trail will be complete with activity stations, interpretive signage,  This trail will become a pilot trail for other local and state properties that will enhance the community, provide equitable access to outdoor recreation, and provide opportunities for people of all abilities to explore nature together.

In conjunction with the trail construction, Ciudad SWCD and the City of Albuquerque will be implementing watershed restoration efforts along the premises to improve the riparian zone and surrounding uplands.  Partners hope to begin construction in January of 2024.
